H-E-B (Butt Family Grocery)
San Antonio–headquartered supermarket chain, founded as C.C. Butt Grocery Store in Kerrville TX in 1905. Expanded to San Antonio in the 1930s–1940s — the same era as H&H’s peak retail distribution. H-E-B is documented in this project primarily through a tentative photographic identification in HH-REF-0000-0022 (Texas Girl Coffee delivery truck, c. 1940s–1950s), which may show Howard E. Butt Sr. and an unidentified second man.

Howard E. Butt Sr. (1887–1964) credo: “he profits most who serves best.” He and his wife Mary Elizabeth (Holdsworth) Butt were known philanthropists. H-E-B is today one of the largest privately held companies in the US and the largest private employer in Texas.
Relevance to H&H Coffee
H-E-B’s San Antonio expansion in the 1930s–1940s makes it a plausible wholesale account for Hoffmann-Hayman. Coffee was a major grocery staple, and H&H was the dominant San Antonio roaster in that era. No primary-source documentation of a formal H&H / H-E-B supply relationship has been located.
Tentative photographic identification
One of the two men in HH-REF-0000-0022 (Texas Girl Coffee delivery truck photo, c. 1940s–1950s) may be Howard E. Butt Sr. If confirmed, the photograph would be the only known visual documentation of the H-E-B / H&H supplier relationship.
Reliability: unverified. The identification is based on era, business context, and resemblance only. It requires comparison against dated Butt photographs.
