Jabez Burns & Sons

New York City. Dominant late-nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century American coffee-roasting machinery builder. The modern Burns Roasters corporate history (manufacturer site, 2026) names the firm after founder Jabez Burns in 1864 and credits him with the self-emptying coffee roaster — the innovation that enabled grocers to sell pre-roasted coffee by the pound at scale. Early adopters named on the manufacturer site include John Arbuckle, Hills Brothers, Folgers, and Superior.

Period trade literature in the project corpus (1874 new Patent Coffee Roaster pamphlets, equipment plates in Ukers) documents sample roasters, production roasters, and cupping-room grinders under the Jabez Burns name. The manufacturer lineage continues today as Burns (Lincolnshire, IL), owned by Probat, Inc. — the U.S. subsidiary of PROBAT-Werke GmbH, Emmerich, Germany.

Nancy Draves (2015)William Hoffmann bought a 150-pound bricked-in Jabez Burns roaster in New York between 1904 and 1912mixed (family papers)
Chris Jasso (1971 letter, via Nancy Draves)H&H ran four Burns Jubilee roasters at 601 Delaware; hooked up ~1940s; sold to Monterrey 1971mixed (family letter paraphrase)
Newspaper (1923)Huntley Manufacturing Company Monitor roasters documented at H&H — parallel or successor linehigh

Net: H&H likely operated both Burns and Huntley roasting hardware across plant generations. The Delaware Street era’s documented Burns line is the Jubilee model (four machines). Dealer reference photos ingested 2026-05-25 identify a surviving Jubilee model 14R46 (PAT. FEB. 9 - 1915 on nameplate) — plausible match for the class of machine Jasso described, though not proven to be from 601 Delaware.

A vintage H&H plant photograph in the collection (HH-PHOTO-2019-0002) shows a different Burns generation: embossed ROASTER (not JUBILEE ROASTER) and PAT. FEB. 6, 1912. on the drum — consistent with William Hoffmann’s 1904–1912 New York purchase of a bricked-in Burns roaster (Nancy Draves, 2015) and not the 1915 Jubilee class. Huntley Monitor attribution for that print remains open until the catalog comparison (TODO-12) is run.

H&H archive print — pre-Jubilee Burns roaster (pat. 1912)

Accession: HH-PHOTO-2019-0002 — B&W print of an unidentified operator sampling beans at a production drum roaster; Hoffmann-Hayman–branded sacks (HOFFMANN-H, SAN ANTONIO) visible behind. Documented 2019-08-19 from a print stack that included other H&H sheets. Site gallery: /assets/images/gallery/2019-08-19-man-at-coffee-roaster-print.jpg.

Distinct from Jubilee 14R46: the 1912 vs 1915 patent dates and ROASTER vs JUBILEE ROASTER nameplates rule out identifying this print as the Jubilee line Jasso sold in 1971.

CoffeeTec as research resource

CoffeeTec (est. 1972) is the KB’s registered used-roaster secondary market for hunting displaced H&H hardware — especially under Antiques Roasters on coffeetec.com. No Burns brand filter on the site nav (2026-05-25); search keywords Burns, Jubilee, Monitor. Probat listings are relevant via the Burns → Probat corporate lineage.
